TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A former astronaut who flew five missions and helped lead NASA back into space after the space shuttle Columbia disaster is charged with murder after a wreck early Monday morning that killed two girls in Alabama, state troopers said.

James Halsell Jr., 59, of Huntsville was arrested after a crash killed 11-year-old Niomi Deona James and 13-year-old Jayla Latrick Parler of Brent on Monday , said a statement from Reginal King, a spokesman for Alabama state troopers.

Troopers said a Chrysler 300 driven by Halsell collided with a Ford Fiesta in which the girls were passengers. Both victims were ejected from the vehicle and died.

Two adults who were in the car suffered injuries and were hospitalized.

A preliminary investigation indicated alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash, said the statement by King. The wreck happened at 2:50 a.m. on U.S. 82, a rural highway east of Tuscaloosa.

Court records weren't available Tuesday to show whether Halsell, a retired Air Force colonel, has a lawyer. A message left at a home telephone number wasn't immediately returned.

An online biography by NASA said Halsell went to work in the aerospace industry in 2006 after a career that included five shuttle flights starting in July 1994.

Selected as an astronaut in 1990, Halsell spent more than 1,250 hours in space. The Louisiana native and one-time test pilot commanded three shuttle flights and served as pilot on two others, according to the space agency.

Halsell led NASA's return-to-flight planning team for the space shuttle after Columbia disintegrated during re-entry in 2003.

Following his retirement from NASA a decade ago, Halsell worked for ATK Launch Systems, Utah, according to his NASA biography.

Retired NASA astronaut charged with murder in DUI crash that killed 2 young sisters

The 59-year-old Huntsville man charged with murder in a predawn crash Monday that killed two young sisters is a well-known and highly-decorated retired NASA astronaut.

James Donald Halsell Jr., a five-flight veteran who was selected by NASA in 1991 to become an astronaut, was arrested Monday in the deaths of Niomi Deona James, 11, and Jayla Latrice Parler, 13. The family had just picked up the girls from Texas for summer vacation with their father and were almost home when the crash happened.

He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail at 11 a.m. Monday and released at 6:30 p.m.after posting $150,000 bond. His mugshot was either never posted on the jail's website, or was removed before authorities announced his arrest. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office released the mugshot this morning.

Multiple attempts to reach Halsell or family members at his Huntsville home have been unsuccessful.

The accident happened at 2:50 a.m. Monday on U.S. 82 near the 65 mile marker, 10 miles east of Tuscaloosa, said Senior Trooper Reginal King. Niomi and Jayla, both of Brent, were passengers in a 2015 Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta was struck by a 2015 Chrysler 300 driven by Halsell.

King said neither of the girls were wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. Niomi was pronounced dead on the scene. Jayla was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center where she was also pronounced dead.

The driver of the Ford, 37-year-old Pernell Deon James and another passenger, 25-year-old Shontel Latriva Cutts, were also taken to the hospital for their injuries. Authorities said James was the father of both girls, who were half-sisters.

King said Halsell was arrested and charged with murder after the preliminary investigation showed that alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

Halsell, a West Monroe, Louisiana native, received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1978, a Master of Science degree in management from Troy University in 1983, and a Master of Science degree in space operations from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1985, according to his NASA biography.

While with NASA, he was the recipient of multiple awards. An F-4 pilot qualified in conventional and nuclear weapons deliveries, he served at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas from 1980 until 1981, and Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, from 1982 through 1984. In 1984-1985, he was a graduate student at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He then attended the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and during the next four years he performed test flights in the F-4, the F-16, and the SR-71 aircraft.

Among his many assignments, Halsell served as manager of Shuttle Launch Integration at Kennedy Space Center. Following the Columbia accident, Halsell led NASA's Space Shuttle Return-to-Flight Planning Team. He then served as the Assistant Director for Aircraft Operations, Flight Crew Operations Directorate. Halsell retired from the Air Force in July 2004, and retired from NASA in November 2006 to accept a position with ATK Launch Systems.

I chyba będzie pierwszym astronautą, który spędzi długie lata za kratami.
Kara nie powinna być za niska, bo mogłoby to wywołać zamieszki rasistowskie.
Jest też problem pasów w poszkodowanym samochodzie. O ile dobrze zrozumiałem , to jedna osoba wypadła z samochodu , mimo zapiętych pasów.
Czy w takiej sytuacji niezapięte pasy lub źle zapięte działają na korzyść sprawcy?
Jednak najbardziej pogrążają astronautę promile w organizmie.

Sprawa będzie głośna i może zintensyfikuje dyskusję nad dostępem do kierowania pojazdami  ludzi o nadmiernym poziomie  pewnych toksyn w organizmie.

Już dziś istnieją rozwiązania techniczne w inteligentnych pojazdach, które uniemożliwiają nieuprawnionym  z uwagi na zawartość alkoholu w organizmie dostęp do kierowania pojazdami.
W wielkomiejskim ruchu testowano już nadzór satelitarny nad ruchem drogowym.
Jednym z najsłabszych elementów  ruchu drogowego pozostaje  nadal człowiek.
Daje się zauważyć tendencję do mniejszej autonomii kierowcy.
W sytuacjach wykraczających poza  algorytm , nad pojazdem kontrolę może przejąć komputer?
Już obecnie, jak wiadomo , w ulicznym ruchu transportowym są podejmowane działania mające na celu wyeliminowanie kierowcy- człowieka.
W innych sytuacjach też można spotkać samochody bez kierowców.

Oj, to nie te czasy, gdy astronauci z całymi rodzinami byli na świeczniku. Od momentu rozpoczęcia rutynowych lotów szatli zawód astronauty stał się zawodem jak każdy inny.

Kto kojarzy nazwisko Halsella? Mimo że odbył pięć lotów, z czego chyba trzy jako dowódca.

Z tego co kojarzę astronauci w USA są cenioną marką. Chyba po każdym locie załoga jest przyjmowana w Białym Domu. Wiadomo , że jak coś przeskrobią to mówi o nich nie tylko Ameryka.

Zdjęcia załóg do dwóch misji są nawet identyczne.

Columbia w misji STS-83 miała dramatyczny przebieg. Awaria ogniwa paliwowego spowodowała niedobór prądu. Niemożność naprawienia ogniwa zaowocowała przerwaniem misji  po czterech dniach  bez zrealizowania programu badawczego. Stało się pierwszy raz tak , że NASA podjęła decyzję o powtórzeniu misji. Columbia po niecałych 3 miesiącach w misji STS-94  ponownie wystartowała z identycznym ładunkiem i załogą. Program wyprawy został zrealizowany.

Został oskarżony o zabójstwo po spowodowaniu wypadku, w którym zginęły dwie nastolatki. Śledczy twierdzą, że do tragedii mogły doprowadzić alkohol i nadmierna prędkość.

Do wypadku doszło w poniedziałek na rzadko uczęszczanej autostradzie na obrzeżach hrabstwa Tuscaloosa w stanie Alabama. Samochód, który prowadził Halsell, zderzył się z fordem fiesta. Autem podróżowały siostry 11-letnia Niomi Deona James i 13-letnia Jayla Latrick Parler. Ojciec wiózł je z Teksasu, gdzie mieszkały z matką, do Alabamy. Mieli tam spędzić wspólnie wakacje. Halsell uderzył w tył samochodu, którym podróżowała rodzina. Nastolatki wypadły z auta i zmarły w wyniku odniesionych obrażeń. Halsell został aresztowany i usłyszał zarzut zabójstwa. Wyszedł na razie za kaucją, której wysokość wyznaczono na 150 tys. dolarów. Jak tłumaczył policjantom, jechał do Luizjany, skąd miał odebrać syna. Z dokumentów sądowych wynika, że nie pamięta wypadku. "Mówił w bełkotliwy sposób, miał rozszerzone źrenice" .

Śledczy uważają, że do tragedii mógł się przyczynić alkohol i nadmierna prędkość. Jak pisze "Tuscaloosa News", w pokoju motelowym, w którym Halsell przebywał tuż przed wyruszeniem w trasę, znaleziono puste opakowanie po tabletkach nasennych i pustą butelkę wina. Z zeznań policjanta, które cytuje "Tuscaloosa News", wynika, że Halsell "mówił w bełkotliwy sposób, miał rozszerzone źrenice, niedbałe ubranie, nie był w stanie utrzymać się prosto". Funkcjonariusz wyczuł też od niego alkohol. 59-letni dziś James Halsell Jr. przez lata był cenionym astronautą.

Jest absolwentem Akademii Sił Powietrznych Stanów Zjednoczonych, którą ukończył w 1978 r. Jako najlepszy w swoim roczniku skończył szkołę pilotów doświadczalnych. Bardzo chciał polecieć w kosmos, więc między 1978 a 1990 r. zgłaszał się do NASA za każdym razem, gdy agencja prowadziła nabór. W końcu został przyjęty w 1990 r. W 2006 r. zaczął pracować w przemyśle kosmicznym. Wcześniej jednak - od 1994 r. - brał udział w pięciu misjach wahadłowców. Spędził w kosmosie ponad 1250 godzin, trzykrotnie był dowódcą misji i dwukrotnie pilotem.

W 1997 roku z powodu awaryjnego przerwania misji STS-83
Columbia podjęła decyzję o jej powtórzeniu, co skutkowało rekordowo krótkim pobytem na Ziemi całej załogi, wynoszącym 84 dni.

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. - A Huntsville native and ex-astronaut has been indicted by a grand jury for his role in a fatal crash.

James Halsell Jr. faces charges from his part in a fatal wreck on Hwy 80 near Tuscaloosa.

The former NASA space shuttle commander was arrested on June 6th on reckless murder charges.

Investigators said both alcohol and speed were major factors in the crash. 11-year-old Niomi James and 13-year-old Jayla Parler were killed in the wreck.

The girls' father told investigators he was driving about 65 miles per hour on US 82 when a car traveling at a very high rate of speed hit his Ford Fiesta from behind.

Troopers said the girls were thrown from the vehicle. A state trooper on the scene said Halsell was disoriented. The trooper said Halsell thought he was traveling on Interstate 20/59 to Louisiana to pick up his son.

The girls' father was driving them from Houston, where they live with their mother, to Alabama for a summer visit.

Grand jurors decided to indict Halsell on Thursday for two counts each of reckless murder and assault. The assault charges stem from injuries sustained by the girls' father and another passenger.

Halsell is currently free on bond right now. He has not made any comment about the indictment.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A former space shuttle commander charged in the traffic deaths of two girls in Alabama was having an abnormal reaction to sleep medication at the time of the crash, his lawyer said.

Jim Sturdivant, an attorney for retired astronaut James Halsell Jr., told WAAY-TV in a Monday report that the two-car wreck was a “sleep-driving episode” caused by Ambien, also known as zolpidem.

Halsell, 63, of Huntsville had an “abnormal response” to the medication, Sturdivant said.

“It is not uncommon for zolpidem or Ambien to render a person incapable of controlling their actions and totally unaware of their behavior,” he said. “While Col. Halsell deeply regrets the tragedy this incident created, he is innocent of the charge that is being brought against him by the Tuscaloosa County district attorney’s office.”

Halsell is awaiting trial on reckless murder charges.

Authorities allege he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol in 2016, when the wreck in Tuscaloosa County killed 11-year-old Niomi Deona James and 13-year-old Jayla Latrick Parler.

The crash happened about 2:50 a.m. on a highway that Halsell mistook for Interstate 20/59, authorities have said. An investigation showed he was intoxicated from alcohol and sleeping pills.

Troopers said at the time that a vehicle driven by Halsell collided with a Ford Fiesta in which the girls were riding. Authorities said their father and a woman were with them. Documents show Halsell told authorities he had been driving to Louisiana to pick up his son.

He has pleaded not guilty.

A judge has set Halsell’s reckless murder trial for Dec. 9 in Tuscaloosa, but it could be delayed at least briefly for other cases.

Halsell flew five shuttle missions before retiring from NASA and worked in private industry before the wreck. He is free on bond.

A former NASA space shuttle commander, who had been indicted on murder and assault charges for his role in a 2016 car crash that killed two young sisters in Alabama, pleaded guilty to lesser charges on Thursday and was sentenced to four years in prison followed by 10 years of probation.

At the time of the crash, the former astronaut, James Halsell Jr., 64, was on probation for an earlier crash in California that had occurred while he was under the influence of alcohol, prosecutors said.

A former Space Shuttle commander will spend at least four years in jail after an appearance today in a Tuscaloosa courtroom.

James Halsell, 64, of Huntsville, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault in the deaths of two young girls in a car crash.

Czyli 4 lata więzienia z możliwością powrotu za kraty na 16 lat  w przypadku naruszenia zasad warunkowego zwolnienia, które ma nastąpić po 4 latach spędzonych w więzieniu.
Głośna sprawa może zapobiec, być może, pewnej ilości  tragicznych wypadków w przyszłości.
