Ukończyła University of California w Los Angeles, uzyskując tytuł doktora z geologii.
Jako doktorantka pracowała w Ames Research Center oraz w NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
2009 była głównym geologiem 86. załogi stacji marsjańskiej (Mars Desert Research Station – MDRS).
2011 była członkiem zespołu naukowego stacji analogowej (Desert Research and Technology Studies – Desert RATS) w Johnson Space Center w Houston.
Pracowała w California Institute of Technology, gdzie brała udział w rozwoju łazika Curiosity i planowaniu jego codziennych operacji.
W momencie naboru do grupy astronautów pracowała jako badaczka na stanowisku podoktoranckim w Katedrze Geologii i Planetologii California Institute of Technology
18.08.2017 rozpoczęła podstawowe szkolenie kosmiczne w JSC w Teksasie.
13.06.2019-22.06.2019 brała udział w eksperymentach w podwodnym laboratorium Aquarius Reef Base jako członek załogi NEEMO-23.
10.01.2020 otrzymała certyfikat astronautki podczas ceremonii w JSC.
09.12.2020 na spotkaniu Narodowej Rady Kosmicznej Stanów Zjednoczonych, ogłoszono jej włączenie do grupy szkoleniowej astronautów Artemis Team, przygotowującej do załogowych wypraw księżycowych.
06.11.2021 roku, w komunikacie prasowym NASA 21-155, ogłoszono jej przydział jako specjalisty misji do załogi Crew-4.
30.12.2025 na forum NSF pojawiła się informacja, że na podstawie zdjęć przed startem Jessica Watkins została włączona do załogi Crew-13.
23.04.2026 komunikat prasowy NASA 26-036 oficjalnie potwierdził jej włączenie do załogi jako dowódcy załogi Crew-13, która ma wystartować 12.09.2026.
Podczas studiów na Uniwersytecie Stanforda była członkinią żeńskiej drużyny rugby oraz reprezentacji kobiet w rugby.
W czasie studiów na Caltech była asystentką trenera żeńskiej drużyny koszykówki tego uniwersytetu.

…I first voiced, I think, a desire to be an astronaut when I was around the age of 9 or 10. I went to a school that was named after a female astronaut. And I think that was when I first asked my parents, you know, who she was, and a little bit about her story. And that's when I first realized that you could go to space for a career, that that was an option that could happen. That is really what kind of kicked off my interest and passion for exploring the cosmos. But growing up, I had lots of different interests. I was always interested in reading and writing, as well as math and science. I was interested in sports and always kind of being a part of a team. So it's neat to be in a role that ultimately is at the intersection of a lot of those interests.

We certainly have the privilege and honor of standing on the shoulders of giants. And so for me, particularly women like Sally Ride and Mae Jemison certainly paved the way and kind of enabled a path for myself and some of my colleagues to follow behind. And certainly grateful for the opportunity to, insofar as I'm able to, be that similar kind of role model as the ones that I had the privilege of growing up with, for young girls and particularly children of color growing up now. I’m certainly aware of and grateful for the opportunity that being a part of this crew represents.
