Astronaut-astronomer Ron Parise, 56, dies

Astronaut Ron Parise works on board the space shuttle Columbia during his first space flight in December 1990. (NASA)

May 11, 2008 — An astronomer-turned-astronaut, who flew as a payload specialist on board NASA's two shuttle missions dedicated to astronomy, Ron Parise, 56, died on Friday (May 9) of a brain tumor after fighting the cancer for three years.

Parise's path to space came as a result of his work at the Computer Science Corporation (CSC), where he helped develop the flight software, electronic system design and mission plan for the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, one of the instruments for NASA's ASTRO payload. In 1984, he was selected by NASA as a payload specialist to fly with the UIT on the STS-61E mission, scheduled for launch in March 1986. (...)

Former astronaut, UV imaging telescope specialist dies
RICHARD STEWART Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle May 11, 2008 Updated: Aug. 8, 2011 12:50 p.m.

Former space shuttle payload specialist Ronald Parise died at his home in Silver Springs, Md., Friday after a three-year battle with brain cancer. He was 56.

An astronomer and computer specialist, Parise was a developer of the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope. He flew on two Space Shuttle missions in 1990 and 1995 that used the telescope to study stars and other celestial objects.

He was born May 24, 1951, in Warren, Ohio. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Youngstown State University and master's and doctorate degrees in astronomy from the University of Florida.

Always interested in science and technology, he first earned his amateur radio license at age 11 and remained active in radio using the call sign WA4SIR, his wife, Cecelia said.

As a teenager, he became active in the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society and built two telescopes. He also learned to fly and enjoyed piloting small aircraft until his disease became advanced, his wife said. (...)

Late Warren astronaut Parise gets historical marker
May 25, 2017 Bob Coupland

Tribune Chronicle / R. Michael Semple Cathryn Parise, center, mother of astronaut and Warren native Ronald A. Parise, views the Ohio Historical Marker dedicated to her son that was unveiled Wednesday at the site of the Neil Armstrong First Flight Lunar Module in Warren. Ronald Parise would have been 66 on Wednesday. He died in 2008 at the age of 56. With Cathryn is Fred Pisanelli, left, a childhood friend of Ronald Parise, and James Valesky, founder of the Warren Heritage Center, which raised money for the marker.

#ASEspotlight: Ronald Parise  🌠
During STS-67, ASE member Parise posed for a picture with the Earth as his backdrop aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in March 1995.
Fun fact: He became a licensed radio operator when he was 11!
Today, we remember Ron on his 75th birthday. ✨
