WHEN he was 10 years old Captain Jon A McBride stood in his parents' garden in West Virginia and launched a prototype rocket, one of his own creations. Fast forward to 1979 and he was a Nasa astronaut, joining the ranks of the mere few hundred men and women to have ever flown to space.

"I was one of those many kids back in the 1950s who was building their own rockets," he said. "I wasn't sticking together coffee cups in the shape of a rocket, I was designing them in my mechanical-drawing class and fabricating rockets powered with manmade fuel.

Jon Andrew McBride today announced his retirement from Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where he has been responsible for overseeing the Astronaut Encounter Team for the past 20 years. A retired Navy Captain and veteran NASA Astronaut who logged more than 8,800 hours of flying time, including 4,700 hours in jet aircraft and an additional 197 hours in space, Jon dedicated his years at the visitor complex to sharing his stories of space exploration with students, families, and space enthusiasts from around the world.

“After my long career with the Navy and NASA, interacting with guests at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and having the chance to share my stories has been a wonderful experience,” McBride said. “I was inspired by astronauts like Neil Armstrong who preceded me, and I hope to have played a role in inspiring the next generation of space explorers. It’s been a joyous journey.”

Raised in West Virginia, McBride is a West Virginia University alum. Following graduation, he charted a path not unlike his astronaut heroes, becoming a Naval Aviator. He received his wings in 1966 and went on to fly 64 combat missions in Southeast Asia. He attended U.S. Naval Postgraduate School earning an Aeronautical Engineering degree in 1971 and in 1978, he was selected by NASA to be part of the first class of space shuttle astronauts.

With NASA, he served as Capsule Communicator for Mission Control and was a lead chase pilot for the first flight of Columbia. On October 5, 1984, McBride launched with STS 41-G Challenger for an eight-day mission. While in orbit, they deployed the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite and performed scientific observations with the OSTA-3 pallet and Large Format Camera. During their mission, McBride also filmed approximately half of the IMAX movie “The Dream Is Alive,” which aired at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for more than 25 years.

McBride went on to serve as NASA’s Assistant Administrator for Congressional Relations (1987-1989) and retired from NASA and the Navy in May 1989 to pursue a career in business.

McBride has been a mainstay of the Astronaut Encounter program, an activity originally conceived for visitors to experience what it’s like to explore space through the perspective of veteran NASA astronauts. He was instrumental in creating Dine With An Astronaut, which debuted in 2002 and later pioneered the popular Fly With An Astronaut program, a half day program customized for a small group of guests to explore Kennedy Space Center with an official astronaut guide. McBride has left his mark through countless media interviews, thousands of Astronaut Encounter presentations and as the voice of the shuttle landing video in Space Shuttle Atlantis®.

August 7, 2024 — Former NASA astronaut Jon McBride, who was the pilot on the first mission to launch seven people into space, has died at the age of 80.

McBride's death on Wednesday (Aug. 7) was confirmed to collectSPACE by NASA after the space agency heard from his family.

A member of the "TFNG" ("Thirty-Five New Guys"), NASA's first group of space shuttle astronauts selected in 1978, McBride's first and only flight into space was as pilot of the space shuttle Challenger's sixth flight into space on Oct. 5, 1984.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Jon McBride. In 2012, he graciously sat down for an oral history interview and reflected on his career as an astronaut:
"I was honored to have gotten to go to Johnson Space Center to start with in 1978 and spend about 11 years with some of the greatest people in the world[. They] made the greatest impression on my life, opened up my whole life to do some things that I never had imagined as a kid. … The fact that I got to go do it myself has just been a pleasure and an honor and a blessing."

The first time I saw a rocket launch was STS-130 with the help of Make-A-Wish. The first astronaut I saw, and one of the first I ever met, was Jon McBride.

As an astronaut “on duty” at the KSCVC and in visits to schools both in the United States and abroad, he spoke to thousands of schoolchildren, encouraging them to “stay in school, keep away from drugs, and listen to your parents.” In Big Jon’s many visits to Japan, he would say “Benkyō, Benkyō, Benkyō” (study, study, study). He was recently overjoyed to hear about Ireland’s first astronaut candidates. NASA’s Independent Verification and Validation Program (IV&V) will dedicate and name its new software laboratory the Jon McBride Software Testing and Research lab or JSTAR in a ceremony to honor retired astronaut and West Virginia native Capt. Jon A. McBride (USN) on Friday, September 23, 2011.

The new facility provides an environment for adaptable software testing and simulation and is designed to enhance tools and methods used to critically assess mission and safety critical software across NASA missions. Mike Mullane w swojej książce wspomina epizod z Johnem (jeszcze przed jego lotem kosmicznym):

„Po zapoznaniu się każdy z nas podszedł do przodu, pomachał do wolnych miejsc i otrzymał koszulkę Hurricane z rąk silikonowej cheerleaderki; przynajmniej klasnęła w dłonie. ... Zauważyłem, że reszta TFNG [astronauci z pierwszej partii wahadłowca] zachowywała się nieśmiało, najwyraźniej chcąc zdobyć koszulkę i zniknąć z powrotem w grupie - z jednym wyjątkiem. Był to „Big John” McBride z West-by-the-Grace-of-Virginia, potężnie zbudowany lotnik marynarki wojennej o rudawych włosach i czerwonawej twarzy. Kiedy wywołano jego imię, wystąpił do przodu jak wszyscy inni. Jednak na tym podobieństwa się kończą. Zamiast nerwowo machać ręką i szybko się cofać, John złapał zdumioną cheerleaderkę, odciągnął ją do tyłu i nagrodził pocałunkiem. Następnie wyciągnął koszulkę ze stosu i pomachał nią publiczności. Tym razem rozległy się brawa i nawet dostawca piwa zaczął klaskać. Jan wydawał się ludziom człowiekiem. Pozostali wymienili zaskoczone spojrzenia. Wygląda jakby był wykonany z innego szablonu.

Żaden z nas nie był zaskoczony, gdy John ogłosił swoją kandydaturę na gubernatora Wirginii Zachodniej po przejściu na emeryturę. Niestety, przegrał w prawyborach Republikanów. Ale gdyby jego ludzie od PR zaryzykowali pokazanie filmu, na którym John otrzymuje koszulkę od tej dziewczyny, każde hrabstwo w stanie poszłoby za nim. Po takim przykładzie przywództwa każdy mężczyzna w starej, dobrej Wirginii Zachodniej głosowałby na niego.

John McBride przeszedł przez Wietnam.

„...Zniżając się w locie, eskortując samolot obserwacyjny RA-5C Vigilante, pilot John McBride chwycił rączkę swojego F-4 Phantom, mijając ostrzał przeciwlotniczy artylerii przeciwlotniczej, broni strzeleckiej i ziemia-to- rakiety powietrzne. Nigdy wcześniej nie doświadczył takiego ognia. Przez około trzydzieści minut pozostawał obok Weegee, który nabierał prędkości, naciskając gaz, żeby dotrzymać mu kroku. Elegancki i pozbawiony rakiet, duży RA-5C szybował w powietrzu z prędkością bliską naddźwiękową, podczas gdy myśliwiec McBride'a pochłaniał paliwo. Mógłbym zostać wrzucony do piekła pięćdziesiąt razy, pomyślał. W końcu skończyli prasowanie Wietnamu Północnego i wrócili na swój lotniskowiec Saratoga…

Jego przybycie do Wietnamu nie było łatwe. Po lataniu myśliwcami odrzutowymi na lotniskowcach McBride ze zdziwieniem przyjął przydział do OV-10 Bronco, dwusilnikowego samolotu wsparcia piechoty o napędzie śmigłowym. Prosto ze Szkoły Pilotów Testowych Marynarki Wojennej w Naval Air Station Patuxent River poprosił o wyjazd do Wietnamu, a jedyne dostępne miejsce znajdowało się w eskadrze Bronco. Ale potem, zanim odszedł, marynarka wojenna go rozwiązała, a McBride wrócił na Phantoma z perspektywą wyprawy na Morze Śródziemne. Potem zadzwonił do niego admirał. „Właśnie straciliśmy załogę w Wietnamie” – powiedział. „Chcesz tam pojechać?” (z książki Rolanda White'a).

McBride’owi zaproponowano dowodzenie misją STS-35 (ASTRO-1), ale ostatecznie odmówił. Z jego ustnej relacji:
„Podjęcie tego wyzwania było trudne. Być może jestem jedyną osobą w historii, która została przydzielona do misji i ją opuściła. Myślę, że tydzień lub dwa później mianowano Vance’a Branda.

Patrząc wstecz, nadal nie wiem, czy bym coś zmienił, ponieważ wróciłem do Wirginii Zachodniej i wielu moich znajomych pomogło mi założyć firmę venture capital, w której moglibyśmy skupić się na sprowadzeniu przemysłu i miejsc pracy do Wirginii Zachodniej, która jest co robiłem przez 10 lat i naprawdę czuję, że wywarłem na to wpływ. Stworzyliśmy wiele możliwości biznesowych dla ludzi.

Jak się okazuje, gdybym poleciał do Houston, poleciałoby ASTRO, poleciałby Vance Brand. Nie wiem. To domysły. Oczywiście żałuję, że nie mogłem raz czy dwa razy polecieć jako dowódca promu kosmicznego, ale to, czego udało mi się dokonać, było pod wieloma względami nie mniej niezwykłe”.

McBride wycofał się z astronautyki i NASA w 1989 roku.
