(...) After his visit we asked Alan to sign the wall of our Control Room, where all astronauts leave their signature after their visit of the Control Centre. Actually, Alan is the first non-astronaut to leave his signature on our wall of fame.

Briefly, between all the activities today, we had Alan greet Luca during a short break to salute and send best wishes to the International Space Station crew to boost morale for our astronauts living and working on the forefront of human exploration.

(...) Luca was promoted to the role of Colonel in the Italian Air Force ahead of his Beyond mission in 2019. He has logged more than 2000 hours flying time, is qualified on more than 20 types of military airplanes and helicopters and has flown over 40 types of aircraft. La scelta di Luca Parmitano come uno dei quattro astronauti che parteciperanno alla missione Artemis III della Nasa "è sicuramente un grande riconoscimento sia professionale per Luca sia per il contributo che il nostro paese sta dando all'attività spaziale della Nasa e per Artemis". Ad affermarlo all'Adnkronos è Umberto Guidoni, l'astronauta e astrofisico italiano che ha partecipato a due missioni Nasa a bordo dello Space Shuttle ed è stato il primo astronauta europeo a visitare, nel 2001, la Stazione spaziale internazionale.

Guidoni, in particolare, ricorda il coinvolgimento dell'Italia nella capsula Orion dell'Esa ma anche in futuro "con l'Italia che si candida per il primo modulo abitativo sulla supecificie lunare". Anche attraverso l'Esa, ricorda, "l'Asi ha portato alla Nasa questo progetto e lo ha approvato", sottolinea Guidoni. Questo annuncio di oggi "è importantissimo" ed "è un riconoscimento del ruolo fondamentale del corpo astronautico italiano", sottolinea Guidoni.

Artemis III will push the boundaries of spacecraft operations in orbit.
@ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano’s assignment as pilot reflects the depth of European expertise in human spaceflight and draws on his extensive operational experience in high-pressure situations. At the same time, ESA’s European Service Module (ESM) will once again provide the critical capabilities that power Orion, demonstrating Europe’s enduring role at the very heart of the Artemis programme.

Artemis e la costruzione di un equipaggio

(...) Parlare oggi di Luna significa entrare in un sistema complesso, dove la selezione degli equipaggi non è una linea semplice tra addestramento e missione. Nel programma Artemis, racconta Parmitano, esistono criteri chiari ma anche stratificazioni inevitabili. Il primo è l’esperienza: “Uno dei requisiti è aver volato in precedenza”.

Da qui si passa all'assegnazione dei ruoli: comandante, pilota, specialista, astronauta incaricato delle attività extraveicolari. Ogni figura ha un peso specifico dentro la missione.

“A parità di competenze entrano in gioco anche aspetti politici”, spiega Luca Parmitano. È il punto in cui la struttura dell’Esa si intreccia con quella dei Paesi membri, con contributi economici e aspettative che inevitabilmente influenzano le assegnazioni.

Parmitano non lo drammatizza, ma lo descrive come parte del sistema. E dentro quel sistema, l’Italia ha un ruolo solido essendo “il secondo paese contributore per quanto riguarda il volo spaziale umano al programma dell'Agenzia spaziale europea. Grazie a questo ci sono buone prospettive per chi indossa la bandiera tricolore”.
