Edwin Jacob 'Jake' Garn jest 164. człowiekiem w kosmosie oraz pierwszym urzędującym członkiem Kongresu, który poleciał w kosmos.
Był republikańskim senatorem ze stanu Utah.

Był to 16. lot kosmiczny w programie STS, a także pierwsza wyprawa wahadłowca Discovery z 7-osobową załogą.

Edwin Jacob 'Jake' Garn kierował podkomisją Senate Appropriations Committee, która nadzoruje wydatki NASA. 
Wkrótce po pierwszej misji Columbii senator wyraził zainteresowanie lotem promem kosmicznym.
Przekonywał, że powinien sprawdzić osobiście jak funkcjonuje tak kosztowny dla podatników projekt jak prom kosmiczny.
Wcześniej Edwin Garn na tej samej zasadzie oblatał prototyp bombowca B-1 i przeprowadził jazdę próbną nowym czołgiem.

Latać zaczął w wieku 16 lat.
Później został pilotem marynarki wojennej i generałem brygady Straży Powietrznej stanu Utah.
W sumie spędził w powietrzu ok 10 000 godzin, a więc więcej niż wielu astronautów.

Odbył lot kosmiczny jako specjalista ładunku, pełniąc rolę obserwatora z ramienia Kongresu oraz obiektu eksperymentów medycznych dotyczących kosmicznej choroby lokomocyjnej.

Choroba kosmiczna, której Garn doświadczył podczas misji, była najpoważniejsza pod względem objawów, jakich do tej pory doświadczali astronauci.
Humorystycznie oparto na tym przypadku skalę choroby kosmicznej, gdzie „jeden Garn” oznacza najwyższy możliwy poziom choroby.

Dr. Robert Stevenson described it for JSC’s Oral History Project: ”Jake Garn was sick, was pretty sick. I don't know whether we should tell stories like that. But anyway, Jake Garn, he has made a mark in the Astronaut Corps because he represents the maximum level of space sickness that anyone can ever attain, and so the mark of being totally sick and totally incompetent is one Garn. Most guys will get maybe to a tenth Garn, if that high. And within the Astronaut Corps, he forever will be remembered by that."

Earlier this week, the Airport’s Greeting Room was named after the former senator, astronaut, Salt Lake City Mayor and Navy pilot. The Senator Jake Garn Greeting Room was the site of a brief ceremony to honor Garn who was joined by @slcmayor and members of the @slccouncil for a photo in front of the Garn Art Mural, created by artist @gordonhuether.
