Theodore Cordy 'Ted' Freeman (18.02.1930-31.10.1964)

Today in History – October 31, 1964 – Snow Goose causes fatal crash of T-38
By MB Barrett

Cytuj
31 October 1964: Captain Theodore Cordy Freeman, United States Air Force, was a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps. He was one of fourteen pilots who had been selected for the third group of candidates in October 1963.

At 10:01 a.m., Saturday morning, Captain Freeman took off at 10:01 a.m. from Ellington Air Force Base, Houston, Texas. He was on the first of two planned training flights, flying a Northrop T-38A-50-NO Talon, 63-8188, Northrop serial number N.5535.  The weather was reported as scattered clouds at 2,000 feet (607 meters), with visibility 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) in haze. He returned to the airfield at 10:38 for touch and goes, but was instructed to exit traffic pattern because of arriving aircraft.

At 10:46, Freeman called Ellington Tower, reporting that he was 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest, inbound. He received no response and 30 seconds later, reported that he was breaking out to the east. The tower acknowledged this transmission and instructed Freeman to make another approach. At 10:47, Freeman called, “Roger, be about two minutes.” There were no further transmissions.

Ted Freeman’s T-38 struck a Lesser Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) in the vicinity of the airport. These birds weigh between 4½ to 6 pounds (2.1–2.7 kilograms). The impact resulted in damage to the left side of the airplane’s forward canopy. Both engines flamed out.

Unable to reach runway at Ellington, Freeman turned away from the airfield to avoid buildings, lowered the landing gear and headed for an open field. At approximately 100 feet (30 meters), he fired his ejection seat. The altitude was too low to allow his parachute to open and Freeman was killed when he struck the ground.

The T-38 crashed at 10:48 a.m., 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) south of Ellington Air Force Base, between Highway 3 and the Gulf Freeway.)

Investigators found blood and feathers in the cockpit. Suspecting a bird strike, a search was carried out and on 12 November, the remains of a snow goose along with fragments of the T-38’s canopy were found approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) southeast of Ellington AFB, and about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the crash site.

ASTRONAUT DIES IN TRAINER CRASH
Nov. 1, 1964

HOUSTON, Oct. 31 (AP)—Capt. Theodore C. Freeman, an American astronaut, was killed today when his T‐38 jet trainer crashed.

First reports indicated a goose might have caused the crash. Workers at the crash scene were reported to have found feathers amid the wreckage. Several flights of geese had been observed flying close to the ground at the time of the crash.

The 34‐year‐old Air Force officer had taken off after a thick morning fog lifted. Low‐hanging clouds remained in the area of Ellington Air Force Base where the plane went down at 8:50 A. M.

Witnesses said the craft was 300 to 500 feet high when the canopy left the aircraft. It was not clear whether Captain Freeman had ejected or had been thrown from the plane on impact.

His body was discovered about 100 yards from the wreckage, his parachute partly opened. The plane did not burn.

The craft, a two‐seater owned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was used for proficiency flights by the astronaut team.

Captain Freeman was in contact with Ellington flight control minutes before the crash. A native of Haverford, Pa., he was among the third group of 14 astronauts named Oct. 18, 1963, and began his training at the nearby Manned Spacecraft Center last Feb. 1.

Dr. Samuel C. Puma, of the spacecraft center's Medical Operations Office, pronounced the captain dead at the scene. The plane went down about two miles west of Ellington

He was making a 50‐minute jet proficiency flight, the first of two the astronaut had scheduled today.

Donald K. Slayton, the center's assistant director for flight crew operations, and Dr. Charles A. Berry, the center's medical officer, informed Mrs. Freeman at her home near the space center. She is the former Faith Dudley Clark of Orange, Conn

Other survivors include a daughter, Faith Huntington Freeman, 10, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Freeman, who live near Lewes, Del., where he completed his highschool education in 1948.

Mrs. Freeman's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Clark Jr. of Grassy Hill Road, Orange.

Captain Freeman's death was

Captain Freeman attended the University of Delaware for a year and was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He elected to serve with the Air Force, and in 1960 received a Master of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan.

#NASARemembers Ted Freeman who lost his life in a T-38 crash #OTD 60 years ago. Freeman was the first NASA astronaut or trainee to die in the line of duty.
We will never forget all the brave members of our astronaut corps who were lost as they worked to advance exploration.
