1995 uzyskał tytuł magistra (inżynierii lotniczej) na Georgia Institute of Technology.

09.1998 rozpoczął pracę w Johnson Space Center jako inżynier testowy w kompleksie instalacyjno-testowym.
Do jego zadań należało testowanie oprogramowania dla ISS i udział w operacjach konserwacji wahadłowca.

09.2006 Kopra służył z sześcioosobową załogą na pokładzie podwodnego laboratorium Aquarius  w ramach misji NASA NEEMO 11 (Extreme Environment Mission Operations).

19.09.2009 NASA w komunikacie prasowym nr 09-218 ogłosiła jego powołanie na specjalistę misji promu STS-133, którego start miał wówczas nastąpić 16.09.2010 lub 29.07.2010.

11.2010 pułkownik Armii USA  w stanie spoczynku.

15.01.2011 podczas upadku z roweru złamał biodro.
19.01.2011 został oficjalnie usunięty z załogi STS-133 w której zastąpił go Stephen Bowen.

14.12.2015 został zatwierdzony jako inżynier pokładowy głównej załogi statku kosmicznego Sojuz TMA-19M.
15.12.2015 Kopra rozpoczął swój drugi lot kosmiczny na pokładzie statku kosmicznego Sojuz TMA-19M.

15.01.2016  EVA-35 z udziałem Kopry i Peake, została przerwana po pojawieniu wody w hełmie Kopry.

29.02.2016 przejął dowództwo nad ISS od Scotta Kelly'ego.
17.06.2016 przekazał dowództwo nad stacją Jeffreyowi Williamsowi.

02.10.2018 Kopra opuscił NASA .

02.06.2020 rozpoczął pracę w kanadyjskiej firmie MDA na stanowisku wiceprezesa ds. robotyki i operacji kosmicznych.

11.03.2022 został mianowany prezesem OneWeb Technologies i pełnił tę funkcję przez około sześć miesięcy.

09.11.2022 został mianowany szefem firmy Nanoracks, bedąc m.in. odpowiedzialnym za prace nad projektem komercyjnej stacji kosmicznej Starlab.

Russia’s Second Six-Time Cosmonaut and ‘Two Tims’ Set for December Launch to Space Station

With less than 12 weeks to go before their launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the three-man crew of Soyuz TMA-19M—consisting of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, U.S. astronaut Tim Kopra and Britain’s Tim Peake—gathered before representatives of the media at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, earlier today (Thursday, 24 September), to discuss their upcoming mission. The event was extensively covered for AmericaSpace by photographer Michael Galindo, whose images are available in his Flickr gallery. Originally scheduled to fly on 20 November, their launch was shifted to 15 December, as 2015’s International Space Station (ISS) manifest morphed in response to several unanticipated events. Should the current schedule hold, the trio will initially join the incumbent Expedition 45 team of Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Sergei Volkov, U.S. astronaut Kjell Lindgren, Japan’s Kimiya Yui and One-Year crewmen Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko, before rotating into Expedition 46 through March 2016 and eventually into Expedition 47 (under Kopra’s command), until their planned return to Earth on 5 May 2016. The mission promises to rapidly shift veteran cosmonaut Malenchenko up the experience table to become one of the world’s top three most seasoned spacefarers, whilst also offering a long-overdue return to space for Kopra and making Peake the first “official” British astronaut.
