Roy Gibson był dyrektorem generalnym ESRO i pierwszym dyrektorem generalnym ESA w l. 1975-1980.

Był odpowiedzialny za sukces wejścia ESA w sferę załogowych lotów kosmicznych.
W 1978 rozwój Spacelaba przechodził trudny okres.
Koszt lotu wahadłowca gwałtownie wzrósł w porównaniu z pierwotnymi szacunkami.
Odegrał kluczową rolę w zatwierdzeniu kolejnej podwyżki kosztów Spacelaba.
Negocjował w sprawie programu Spacelab z administratorem NASA Robertem Froschem.

I spoke to Roy this morning. What an absolute honour to speak to @ESA’s founding DG, as ESA’s current – and 8th – DG, to wish him congratulations for a century of life, a life which was in large part dedicated to Europe and its space activities. Roy’s preference for diplomacy and for bringing together the best that Europe has to offer is timeless, and a tradition I aspire to uphold myself. I have fond memories of times where I had the pleasure of working with Roy, and learned from his wisdom and experience and appreciated observing a true gentleman in action. Happy birthday, Roy, what a ride!

Today the #ESAarchives marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roy Gibson, ESA’s first Director General who joined its predecessor ESRO in 1967.

He joined ESA’s forerunner ESRO in 1967 as Deputy Director and Head of Administration at ESTEC, and is pictured here (left) during a visit by Hermann Bondi and Pierre Auger and (right) at a party in 1971 for his appointment as ESRO Director of Administration.
