I am taking an oath to naturalise as a citizen of Malta this morning, thrilled to join this country with 7000 years of civilisation: “I solemnly swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the People and the Republic of Malta and its Constitution. (So help me God).”
Sworn and Subscribed this 7th day of August 2023. 🇲🇹

Please allow me to quote Steve Jobs’s original iPhone announcement in 2007: “This is a day I’ve been looking forward to for two-and-a-half years. Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.”

Yes, I’ve been looking forward to this mission for 2.5 years now. From mission proposal, planning, trajectory design, to crew selection, everything has been done by the customer. And now, here we are!

Until 2021, space missions were solely the privilege of governments. Private individuals were unable to charter a Space Shuttle like they would do for an airplane.

Then @inspiration4x came along and changed everything. It was a space tourist mission, but unlike any space tourists before it. For the first time in spaceflight history, a private individual could rent an entire spacecraft, planned, designed, and executed their own very personal mission with clear objectives. It should never be underrated.

Later, we saw the emergence of the Polaris Program, which is essentially a new Gemini for our time, but this time entirely driven by an individual rather than a government.

With Fram2, we aim to open this door even wider. This is the true allure of commercial spaceflight.

I’ve read many sci-fi stories about the first human missions to Mars, usually led by NASA or some fictional government. Rarely does anyone dare to imagine such a mission may be carried out privately. But now, I increasingly believe that someday we will reach Mars — and it may be a person, or a company, not a nation, who gets there.

A new chapter in space exploration is unfolding before our eyes. Stay tuned! https://f2.com

Utworzył darmowy punkt Wi-Fi w oparciu o konstelację Starlink na biegunie południowym, a teraz zamierza to samo zrealizować na biegunie północnym.

Never has a man achieved a goal so diametrically opposed to his wishes.
Establishing a free Wi-Fi spot at the South Pole had fascinated me since a few years before, and now here I am going to set one up at the North Pole. Could anything be more crazy? @Starlink

ALE is a bit conservative but you should have no problem using Starlink at Union Glacier.
However, Starlink (and Wi-Fi in general) is not approved for use at the South Pole. There are two areas in Antarctica where Starlink is not available:
* ASMA-5 (Antarctic Specially Managed Area 5) covers the South Pole and its surrounding area: https://ats.aq/devph/en/apa-database/78
* ASPA-122 (Antarctic Specially Protected Area 122) covers a small area near McMurdo: https://ats.aq/devph/en/apa-database/27
However, Iridium is approved to use at the South Pole because it uses different frequency.

I was once told that the Dragon is fully automatic, and all you needed to know is how to put out a fire, and you’d be ready to fly.
Until a few weeks ago, I received 2.8 GB of learning materials. Not only do you need to understand every detail of the spacecraft and countless procedures, but you must also learn how to administer injections and even perform urinary catheterization in a weightless environment.
It’s nuts.

2024 is nearing its end. This year, I’ve completed 114 flights, covering 335,000 km, spending a total of 19 days, 18 hours in the air.

36 countries or dependent territories visited this year: Argentina, Chile, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malta, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, United States of America, Spain, Germany, Belgium, France, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Norway, Iceland, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, Switzerland, Albania, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Singapore, Nepal, Bhutan, Greenland, Denmark, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As of the end of 2024, total flight count stands at 964, with a cumulative of 2.6 million km and 160 days spent in the air.

Today was a busy day.

I woke up at 2 PM and departed from our quarantine facility at 3:30 PM in a convoy of three Teslas. With NASA security police escort leading the way, we didn’t have to stop for traffic lights.

We had breakfast at HangarX before heading to the pad. Arriving at the suit-up room near Pad 39A, we received our satchels containing some necessary medicines, along with a flight iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro. SpaceX had 3D-printed a tether to connect the two earbuds so they wouldn’t get lost in microgravity. I spent some time loading apps, including X, YouTube, and an offline version of OpenStreetMap, to which I had made many contributions in its early years. I also downloaded apps that use iPhone and iPad sensors to monitor cabin pressure—as an independent redundancy in the unlikely event of cabin depressurization.

After that, we had a quick weather briefing, suited up, and jumped into the Teslas for the ride to the pad. Unlike all previous Dragon missions, we’ll launch from the East Coast and splashdown the West Coast. This means we’re actually traveling from one place to another. We’d pack our clothes, personal phones and watches into a bag, which SpaceX staff will transport to Hawthorne, and upon our splashdown, hand over to us on the recovery ship.

Ingress, buckling in, seat rotation, comms check, and suit leak check — everything went smoothly. By the time the dry dress rehearsal completed, it was already dark and raining. The walkway from the crew access arm to the tower isn’t fully protected from rain. When the side hatch reopened, the SpaceX ninja team met us with umbrellas and rain jackets, which we wore over our spacesuits to keep our “dry dress” from turning into a “wet dress.”

We returned to the suit-up room for a short debrief, had “lunch,” and then headed back to the quarantine facility at 11 PM. The rest of the night was filled with a few more meetings to review some final details. The flight software on Dragon had been frozen, and there were some newly discovered bugs we needed to be aware of. I also had a call with our psychotherapist, Rebecca, who has been working with us since the very beginning of training.

At 2:30 AM, Ben, Space Operations Physician at SpaceX, and I went out for a 2-mile run. Jaime, Ben and I have been running every night during quarantine, and sometimes I feel like they have become my bodyguards in Merritt Island’s darkness.

Tomorrow, there’s a scheduled Starlink launch at nearby SLC-40. I’m hoping it goes well and that I might watch it from a distance at our quarantine facility.

I presumed that viewing Earth from 400+ km above would feel like gazing at something infinitely far, where depth perception wouldn’t matter. However, that’s not true—you can distinctly see Earth’s spherical shape, and the layers between the clouds and the ground stand out vividly.

Captured with Canon EOS R5 C with RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE. Unfortunately, 8K resolution isn’t enough for all the details. Will bring a better camera next time.
