1965 ukończył Akademię Sił Powietrznych Stanów Zjednoczonych, uzyskując tytuł licencjata (inżynieria mechaniczna).
1966 uzyskał tytuł magistra (inżynierii lotniczej) na Uniwersytecie Purdue.
 
Służył jako pilot wojskowy na samolotach F-4, F-102, F-106 i A-37.

Brał udział w operacjach bojowych w Wietnamie i wykonał 361 misji bojowych.

1971 ukończył szkolenie w USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School w Edwards AFB.

Podczas szkolenia poleciał prototypowym samolotem NF-104 na wysokość 31821 m.

Po ukończeniu szkolenia pozostał w szkole jako pilot-instruktor F-104.

1973-1976 służył jako pilot testowy w Zakładzie Eksperymentalnym Samolotów i Uzbrojenia Królewskich Sił Powietrznych w Boscombe Down w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Przeprowadził różne testy samolotów Jaguar, Buccaneer, Hawk i Jet Provost.

1976 ukończył szkolenie w Wyższej Szkole Dowództwa i Sztabu Powietrznego Sił Powietrznych USAF.
Po ukończeniu szkolenia pełnił funkcję zastępcy szefa sztabu ds. badań i analiz w Dowództwie Sił Powietrznych w Waszyngtonie.
W trakcie tej służby nadzorował rozwój i testy myśliwców F-15 i F-16 oraz przygotowywanie raportów z ich wyników dla Departamentu Obrony, Departamentu Stanu i komisji Kongresu USA.

1977 był jednym z 208 kandydatów 8 grupy astronautów NASA.
 
Jest pułkownikiem Sił Powietrznych w stanie spoczynku.
 
Po przyjęciu do 9 grupy astronautów NASA pracował w panelu bezpieczeństwa lotów kosmicznych NASA, pełnił funkcję głównego operatora łączności z załogą (CAPCOM) i brał udział w programie mającym na celu stworzenie nowego wyświetlacza w kokpicie wahadłowca.
 
26.09.1997 opuścił korpus astronautów NASA

1997 po opuszczeniu korpusu astronautów wrócił do San Antonio i rozpoczął pracę w Executive Management Group United Services Automobile Organisation (USAO).

Całkowity jego nalot wynosi ponad 7000 godzin na 34 typach samolotów.

2008 John Blaha został wprowadzony do US Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Astronaut Tells Of Down Side To Space Life
By The Associated Press Jan. 22, 1997

John E. Blaha, the astronaut who spent four months on the Russian space station Mir, said today that he got depressed after a few weeks there and that his stay would have been easier if he had had private quarters and a fellow American on board.

''Isolation is a tough thing,'' Mr. Blaha said from the space shuttle Atlantis, which is scheduled to bring him home on Wednesday just after sunrise.

His first month on the space station last fall was the hardest, he said. He had to get used to two Russian astronauts he barely knew; the original crew was scratched after one of the men was found to have minor heart trouble.

''After I'd been there a month, I was a little bit getting psychologically depressed,'' said Mr. Blaha, a 54-year-old retired Air Force colonel who flew 361 combat missions in the Vietnam War.

''So what I finally said to myself is: 'Hey, John, you're here. You may live the rest of your life here.' The more I got into that mode, I became very comfortable. I would have been happy to stay there for the rest of my life except for one thing, and that's that I missed my wife.''

Mr. Blaha expressed his feelings in a radio hookup with four people living in an airtight chamber at the Johnson Space Center in Houston as part of a 60-day air-and water-recycling experiment for the future international space station. Today was the eighth day of confinement for the four chamber occupants and the 127th day in space for Mr. Blaha.

The astronaut sounded envious when told of the private bedrooms in the chamber, which is three stories high and 20 feet in diameter. Although the two Mir astronauts had private quarters, he did not. Neither does his replacement, Dr. Jerry L. Linenger, a Navy captain who will spend the next four and a half months on the Mir.

''I won't go into all the detail,'' Mr. Blaha said, ''but the bottom line is, awful nice when you're in isolation to have a little bit of private space, even if it's, oh, 7 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet.''

Mr. Blaha suggested that next time, the chamber experiment include people of different nationalities who do not speak a common language well.

''That introduces, I think, another element of psychological pressure and stress,'' he said. ''The people who are alone by themselves and don't have a friend from their own culture, I think, are going to even have a little more special kind of problem and we need to pay attention to it.''

The crews of the international space station will ultimately consist of Americans, Canadians, Japanese and Europeans from a variety of countries.
