1987 jako uczestnik selekcji do 12. grupy astronautów NASA był jednym ze 117 finalistów.

Podczas swojej służby w NASA piastował różne stanowiska: był szefem Oddziału Wsparcia Lotów i kierował przygotowaniami wahadłowców przed startem.
Był koordynatorem NASA (dyrektorem operacyjnym) w Centrum Koordynacyjnym im. J.Gagarina.
 
2001 jako pułkownik armii amerykańskiej został przeniesiony w stan spoczynku.
 
03.2001 został przydzielony do głównej załogi Ekspedycji 8 na ISS jako inżynier pokładowy nr 2.

Po katastrofie promu Columbia załogę ISS zredukowano do 2 osób, co wymusiło reorganizację załóg.
02.2003 roku został mianowany dowódcą załogi rezerwowej Ekspedycji 8 i załogi głównej Ekspedycji 9 (ISS-9), w obu przypadkach wspólnie z Walerym Tokariewem.

28.01.2002 podjęto decyzję o przeniesieniu Williama MacArthura wraz z Walerym Tokariewem do załogi rezerwowej 10. Ekspedycji i do załogi głównej 12. Ekspedycji.

01.2004 z powodu zarzutów rosyjskich lekarzy do stanu zdrowia astronauty został usunięty z załogi, a na jego miejsce 13.01.2024 powołano Leroya Chiao, który rozpoczął szkolenie w załodze u Walerego Tokariewa.

14.09.2005 na posiedzeniu Komisji Państwowej w dniu  r. William MacArthur i Valery Tokarev zostali zatwierdzeni jako główna załoga Ekspedycji 12 na ISS, a Gregory Olsen został zatwierdzony jako uczestnik lotu kosmicznego Visiting Expedition Nine.

03. 2007 roku został przeniesiony do kategorii menedżerów astronautów i przydzielony do pracy w Departamencie Bezpieczeństwa Transferów i Zapewnienia Misji w JSC, od 2011 roku pełni funkcję dyrektora tego Departamentu.
 
18.07.2017 w komunikacie prasowym NASA J17-009 ogłoszono jego odejście z agencji z dniem 24.06.2017.
 
Łączny jego nalot wynosi ponad 9000 godzin na 41 typach samolotów.

NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao Replaces William McArthur as Next Space Station Commander

Veteran NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao will replace William S. McArthur, Jr., as the commander of Expedition 9, the next mission aboard the International Space Station.

The change in crew assignment is a result of a temporary medical issue related to McArthur’s qualification for this long
duration flight. Because of medical privacy considerations, no information about McArthur’s condition will be made public.

As a member of the Expedition 9 backup crew, Chiao has been training alongside McArthur for months. Chiao joins Russian Flight Engineer and Soyuz Commander Valery I. Tokarev for the six-month mission. The Expedition 9 crew is scheduled for launch aboard a Soyuz spacecraft in April. European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers is the Board Engineer rounding out the three-member Soyuz crew. Kuipers returns to Earth with Expedition 8.

“This is a temporary medical issue for Bill,” said Astronaut Office Chief Kent Rominger. “Because we are very cautious in our approach to crew health, we train backups for this kind of situation. We plan to assign Bill to another flight in the near future,” he said.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed I won’t fly on the Expedition 9 mission, but I understand the necessity of the medical criteria that are in place for long-duration space flight,” McArthur said. “I know that Leroy will ensure all of the Expedition 9 objectives are met, and I look forward to flying soon on another Space Station mission.”

The international space station's managers have switched the lineup for the outpost's next crew again, this time citing compatibility and teamwork issues.

For the second time in less than a month, the international space station's managers have switched the lineup for the outpost's next crew, this time citing compatibility and teamwork issues.

NASA announced Friday that astronaut Michael Fincke and cosmonaut Gennady Padalka will be launched aboard a Russian rocket to the space station in April. They have been training together for years.

Last month, NASA said Leroy Chiao would be on the next station flight, taking the place of a fellow astronaut pulled for undisclosed medical reasons, William McArthur Jr. The cosmonaut who had trained with McArthur, Valery Tokarev, was to go up with Chiao.

But on Friday, NASA acknowledged it would be better to keep the two-man teams intact and said Chiao would fly to the space station this fall with the cosmonaut with whom he has trained for years: Salizhan Sharipov.

Proposed by Russians

The Russian space program, which has decades of long-duration spaceflight experience, proposed the changes to NASA as well as representatives of the other countries taking part in the station. The decision is still subject to internal review, but NASA expects that to be completed soon.

Fincke, an Air Force lieutenant colonel, and Padalka, a colonel in the Russian Air Force, will replace the two men who have been living aboard the space station since October. They will be launched with Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers, who will spend a week on the orbiting complex and return with the current residents.

The space station is limited to two residents until shuttle flights resume.

Mystery object sighted

Flight controllers, meanwhile, are puzzled by a small object that floated away from the space station following a thruster-firing test of a newly arrived Russian cargo ship.

On Thursday, astronaut Michael Foale reported seeing a 6- to 8-inch (15- to 20-centimeter) rectangular item pass over a solar panel of the crew living quarters and float away. He transmitted photographs of the object to Mission Control. The object has yet to be identified, but poses no safety hazard, officials said.

But there wasn’t much time for celebration.

The station’s two residents spent the day cleaning air filters, upgrading exercise equipment and doing other maintenance. Astronaut William McArthur Jr. and cosmonaut Valery Tokarev, who arrived Oct. 3 for a six-month stay, also prepared for a spacewalk next week.

Former station astronaut Michael Fincke said there were handshakes, smiles and congratulatory e-mails at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, but work prevented too long a pause.

“It’s not that we’re not feeling celebratory,” he said. “The space shuttle isn’t flying right now. And we got to figure out how to finish flying the space shuttle in the next four years and to finish building the space station like we promised to.” (...)

NASA Astronaut Takes On Space Week In Killeen

In celebration of the 12th annual Space Week at West Ward Elementary, NASA astronaut William “Bill” McArthur, a colonel in the U.S. Army (retired), will relive his spaceflight experience for students, teachers and the Killeen community on Oct. 25.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. CDT, McArthur will give a presentation to students in grades K-2 at West Ward Elementary, 709 W. Dean Ave., Killeen, Texas. Along with video of his Expedition 12 mission to the International Space Station, McArthur will discuss how being in the military helped him achieve his goal of traveling in space. McArthur will end his presentation by taking questions from students. At 9:45 a.m., McArthur will assist fifth-grade students as they launch rockets during the Armed Forces Rocket launch.

A community luncheon is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. The luncheon is free and open to the public and media. To RSVP, please call 254-336-1830.

McArthur will give a final presentation to students in grades 3-5 at 12:30 p.m. McArthur was selected as an astronaut by NASA in January 1990. Since then, he has held various assignments within the Astronaut Office. The veteran of four spaceflights has logged more than 224 days in space, including more than 24 hours during four spacewalks.

McArthur was the commander and science officer on Expedition 12 to the International Space Station, which launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Sept. 30, 2005. During his six-month tour of duty aboard the space station, McArthur and his crewmate conducted two spacewalks and became the first crew to dock spacecraft to every Russian docking port on the complex. They also were the first two-person crew to conduct a spacewalk in both Russian and U.S. spacesuits. McArthur is a graduate of West Point Academy where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in June 1973. McArthur retired from the Army in 2001.

Space Week is a weeklong educational event held in coordination with the NASA Explorer School Program. The program provides educators access to NASA resources through a comprehensive set of free classroom materials to help teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts. This year’s West Ward Elementary Space Week includes guest speakers from NASA, Harvard Medical School, the University of Texas and XCOR. Space Week runs Oct. 22-26.

Veteran NASA astronaut Bill McArthur has no qualms about hanging up his spacesuit after his stint as commander of the international space station, but leaving the orbital laboratory behind last month was no easy task.

“We did see the space station recede in our view with a very strong sense of sadness because it was home for us,” McArthur told Space.com in a recent telephone interview. “It’s of course wonderful to be back.”

McArthur, originally from Wakulla, N.C., spent six months in command of the space station alongside Russian cosmonaut and flight engineer Valery Tokarev during their Expedition 12 mission. The two astronauts and short-term station visitor Marcos Pontes — Brazil’s first astronaut — returned to Earth last month.

“I think our recovery has gone quite well, and it’s nice to be home with friends and family,” said McArthur, who will discuss his 190-day spaceflight — the last of his astronaut career — with the public Thursday night at the Space Center Houston near NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

The Expedition 12 crew arrived at the space station in October 2005 with the visiting U.S. space tourist Gregory Olsen. McArthur and Tokarev performed two spacewalks during their flight, as well as a myriad of experiments and maintenance tasks. They also launched an unmanned spacesuit into orbit from the space station and caught a rare orbital view of a solar eclipse’s shadow on the Earth. (...)
