Reminiscing today about workouts on the @Space_Station. Our on-board exercise suite consists of a treadmill, a weight lifting device, and even a space version  of a stationary bicycle. Thanks to these, @NASA_Astronauts return to Earth with our bones and muscles in tact!

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir: ‘It’s always worth making the leap that scares you’
May 25, 2024

(...) After not being chosen for the 2009 class of NASA astronauts, Meir said she considered not applying again to protect herself from the mental anguish that comes with rejection. But with dogged determination and support from others, Meir learned that the second time was the charm: Since being selected to the 21st NASA astronaut class in 2013, she has spent more than half a year in space while serving as a flight engineer onboard the International Space Station; contributed to experiments in biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development; and made history when she conducted the first three all-woman spacewalks. Behold the “space cake.” Making cakes on the @Space_Station with our rather limited “baking” supplies is an art, requiring creativity and resourcefulness. I loved making cakes for my crewmates on my first mission and considered myself adept, but our cosmonaut colleagues on Expedition 74 have certainly taken it to the next level. Here’s an example of their recent work, in celebration of 100 days in space for
@astro_hathaway and @Soph_astro, and my 300th day. It tasted even better than it looked!

Life science research in extreme environments: a conversation with astronaut Jessica Meir
Published: 10 February 2026

(...) A few months after obtaining my master’s from the International Space University in Strasbourg (France), I started working here in Houston for Lockheed Martin’s Human Research Facility (NASA Johnson Space Center); basically, the group that organizes and coordinates all the life sciences experiments on the space shuttle and the ISS. I worked there for three years as a scientist supporting human physiology research, coordinating other people’s experiments, training astronauts, and writing procedures. During that time, I had some extraordinary opportunities like participating in research flights on NASA’s reduced-gravity aircraft and serving as an aquanaut in an underwater habitat. It was really cool coordinating other people’s experiments, but I got to the point where I wanted to do my own science. And I came across this animal physiology research that Paul Ponganis’ group was doing at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography with diving animals in extreme environments. It really appealed to all sides of me, which led me down the path of going to graduate school and doing a Ph.D. (...)

You asked for it, and you got it! Behold the making of a space cake, @roscosmos cosmonaut style! Our crewmate Andrey Fedyaev made this video capturing the process, using sweetened condensed milk, layers of intricately sliced honey bread and yogurt (@roscosmos food supplies) and rehydrated berries (@NASA food supplies).

Our crewmates are such “space kitchen” masters, that I’ve eaten far more cake on the @Space_Station than I do on Earth! Each homemade cake is unique, of course (another beloved ingredient is pine nuts!). This one happened to be for my birthday last week. Thank you to all of the Expedition 74 crew for making it such a special event! 🎂🎉
