Ma to być drugi z około sześciu startów w tym roku.

The next Starshield launch for the NRO's Proliferated Architecture is coming up! Designated NROL-172 and scheduled for NET May 11th at 22:28 UTC, this will be the 2nd of ~6 launches this year. Unlike the last 2 missions, NROL-48 & 105, NROL-172 will be a droneship landing again.

Trzynasty dedykowany start z budowanymi przez SpaceX i Northrop Grummann satelitami szpiegowskimi dla Narodowego Biura Rozpoznania (NRO), amerykańskiej agencji wywiadowczej. Nowa konstelacja ma składać się z setek pojazdów zbudowanych na bazie platformy satelitarnej Starlink i pozwalać NRO na bardzo częstą obserwację celów niemal na całym świecie. Powstaje ona w ramach prowadzonej przez SpaceX inicjatywy Starshield, której celem jest wykorzystanie technologii Starlink na rzecz bezpieczeństwa narodowego. Na szczycie rakiety znajdzie się prawdopodobnie kilkanaście satelitów Starshield.

SpaceX is targeting Monday, May 11 for a Falcon 9 launch of the NROL-172 mission from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Liftoff is targeted for 7:13 p.m. PT, with a backup opportunity available on Tuesday, May 12 at 3:15 p.m. PT if needed.

This will be the ninth flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Sentinel-6B, Twilight, and six Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

Pierwszy start operacyjny w ramach programu nastąpił 22.05.2024.
Jest to fundamentalna zmiana agencji w podejściu do rozpoznania kosmicznego.
Zamiast niewielkiej liczby dużych, drogich i wysoce wydajnych satelitów, nowa konstelacja rozmieszcza setki mniejszych statków kosmicznych na LEO, co pozwala osiągnąć wyższy wskaźnik rewizyt, większą odporność na utratę poszczególnych zasobów oraz dostarczanie użytecznych danych w ciągu minut, a nie godzin.

12.05.2026 o 02:13:50 z wyrzutni SLC-4E w Vandenberg wystrzelona została RN Falcon-9R, która wyniosła na orbitę 22 satelity Starshield (misja NRO L-172).
Pierwszy stopień RN (B1097.9) w T+8' wylądował na ASDS OCISLY.

(...) The National Reconnaissance Office flew its 13th mission supporting an intelligence-gathering constellation it calls the “proliferated architecture” on Monday night. (...)

At 8.5 minutes after liftoff, B1097 landed on the drone ship, ‘Of Course I Still Love You’, positioned in the Pacific Ocean. This was the 196th landing on this vessel and the 610th booster landing to date for SpaceX. (...)

For this mission, the NRO did add some additional information by noting that its Geospatial Intelligence Systems Acquisitions Directorate (GEOINT) is contributing to the satellite constellation.

“GEOINT’s contribution to the NRO’s proliferated architecture includes electo-optical, radar, and relay satellites,” the NRO said. “Additionally, these relay satellites enable inter-satellite optical communications and serve as a key component of the NRO’s resilient communications architecture as well as the Department of War’s (DoW) upcoming space-data network.”

The NROL-172 mission is the second flight booked on a Falcon 9 rocket as part of the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 contract, managed by the United States Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC).
