XXI wieku”.

Viasat prepares to demo commercial alternative to NASA’s TDRS
By paul brinkmann - October 5, 2026

California satellite operator Viasat is readying for the launch of a communications satellite that aims to demonstrate commercial spacecraft can take over the duties of NASA’s aging Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) network.

The Maxwell satellite, built and operated by Rocket Lab, is set for a journey into orbit on the upcoming SpaceX Bandwagon-5 launch from Florida, said Skylar Cox, chief technology officer of Viasat Space & Mission Systems, during a Payload Space webinar last week. SpaceX hasn’t yet announced a launch date.

The demonstration is part of NASA’s ongoing Communications Service Project (CSP) to eventually replace TDRS, the first of which began operations in 1983. NASA in late 2024 stopped using TDRS for new missions, but noted “current TDRS users, like the International Space Station, Hubble Space Telescope, and many other Earth- and universe-observing missions, will still rely on TDRS until the mid-2030s.”

With TDRS, mission controllers have experienced regular, if brief, communication dropouts as their spacecraft antennas switch from one satellite to another. The goal of CSP is to improve on that record by demonstrating continuous relay communications in low-Earth orbit, Cox said.

Viasat in 2022 received $53.3 million, one of several such awards NASA made under the project that year, totaling $278.5 million. Others with CSP contracts are Amazon’s Kuiper, SES Satellite, SpaceX and Telesat.

“We’ve been preparing for this for a long time,” Cox said of the Maxwell launch. “We’re in the last stretch here, so the team’s exhausted. But the vehicle is fully integrated on the launch vehicle, and we’re just kind of waiting now to turn it on and get it going.”

He continued: “With Maxwell, we’ll be demonstrating a kind of end-to-end service, so we’re moving away from these rigid, constrained windows of communication opportunities, and we’re starting to see this always-on, persistent communication emerge as an available option.”

NASA is also applying this strategy of partnering with commercial providers to establish communication networks around the moon and eventually Mars, rather than the agency owning and operating them, said Greg Heckler, deputy program manager of capability development for NASA’s SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program, during the webinar.

He noted NASA’s larger goal is to someday establish a unified “Solar System Internet.”

“TDRS was a workhorse for the agency for decades,” Heckler said, “but we made a decision in the agency several years ago to not build anymore, and so we needed to maintain what we call Earth relay capability for our science and human exploration missions.”

Other companies with CSP awards are progressing toward demonstrations. SpaceX’s award, for example, is for $69.95 million to connect its existing Starlink constellation and extensive ground system to spacecraft through optical links. NASA is equipping the Orion spacecraft for the upcoming Artemis III mission with two SpaceX Starlink mini laser terminals to demonstrate this capability.

(...) LEO Express 4 is the fourth flight for Mira, Impulse’s highly agile spacecraft. We unveiled an upgraded Mira spacecraft on LEO Express 3; this mission will further validate its systems and capabilities. This will be an Impulse-only mission, with no customer payloads onboard, that puts the spacecraft fully through its paces ahead of future flights, testing across a range of new maneuvers and operating conditions.

Flying in a mid-inclination path in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), LEO Express 4 will expand Mira’s flight heritage while proving out the vehicle’s responsiveness and maneuverability in space. Delivered less than a year after the prior mission’s launch, LEO Express 4 also showcases Impulse’s ability to quickly ramp production while maintaining the highest level of quality, with multiple Mira vehicles in production at our Redondo Beach facility.

Mission Objectives include:

Full Checkout for Upgraded Propulsion: Demonstrate complete capabilities of Mira’s increased delta-v across a range of maneuvers, including highly responsive thruster firings in quick succession

Building Flight Heritage: Prove out the performance capabilities of upgraded systems on orbit

Demoing New Advanced Systems: Additional avionics upgrades have been added for Mira since its last mission, and this flight will demonstrate their performance ahead of future customer launches (...)

ASOG’s usual tow partner Signet Warhorse I left Port Canaveral this morning and is making 10 knots on Bob’s bearing. Fairing recovery vessels have swapped brief towing stints with the oceangoing tugs. I expect SWI will take the tow duty as they near the splash zone. 👍🚀⛴️

We’re 3 for 3 in orbit this October. This time, it’s space drugs. W-7 carries pharmaceutical hardware and a promising new type of cancer medicine known as a protein degrader. Microgravity will help overcome one of its biggest limitations: poor solubility.

The Maxwell spacecraft is in orbit and ready to get to work.
The spacecraft we built for @viasat launched from Cape Canaveral yesterday.

Over the next five months, it will demonstrate how Viasat's ViaSat-3 Ka-band and global L-band networks can give low Earth orbit missions near real-time data and telemetry, tracking and command (TT&C) at any point in orbit, supporting
@NASA's Communications Services Project as it prepares to retire its TDRS fleet.
Congratulations to the Viasat team on a successful launch!

BREAKING: A new type of satellite armor designed to withstand debris traveling over 15,000 mph has reached orbit for the first time aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Developed by U.S. startup Atomic-6, Space Armor uses advanced composite tiles to protect spacecraft from high-speed debris without blocking radio communications or generating large amounts of secondary debris.

The technology launched October 20 aboard Portal Space Systems' Starburst-1 satellite on SpaceX's Bandwagon-5 mission.

In ground testing, the armor successfully stopped projectiles traveling faster than 7 kilometers per second, while minimizing the fragments produced by impact.

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and Space Force's Space Systems Command have backed its development with approximately $5 million in combined funding, including matching funds.
The orbital mission will help validate the technology for future commercial and military spacecraft, as growing satellite constellations increase demand for protection against collisions and untrackable debris.

The armor is now in orbit, but a successful debris interception in space has not been reported.

SpaceX launches Starfall reentry capsule, 31 customer payloads on Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission
October 18, 2026 Will Robinson-Smith

(...) Nearly nine minutes after liftoff, B1085 will target a landing on the droneship, A Shortall of Gravitas. If successful, this will be the 167th landing on this vessel and the 672nd Falcon booster landing to date.

Beyond SpaceX’s Starfall capsule, 20 of the remaining 31 payloads to be deployed were manifested by multinational mission management company, Exolaunch. Those include four radio-frequency monitoring satellites from Virginia-based, HawkEye 360; four communications satellites for Finnish micro satellite company, Iceye; and six navigation satellites from California-based, Xona Space Systems. (...)

SpaceX first debuted its reentry capsule called Starfall back in June. (...)

The Federal Aviation Administration noted in an environmental assessment of Starfall that the vehicle is about 0.75 meters (2.5 feet) tall, 3.1 meters (10.2 feet) in diameter, and has a mass of about 2,100 kilograms (4,600 pounds). The FAA said a single Starfall capsule has the ability to support up to 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of payload mass.

SpaceX didn’t state what, if any, payloads were onboard this Starfall mission. (...)

SpaceX’s Starfall isn’t the only reentry vehicle onboard the Bandwagon-5 mission. Varda Space Industries, which focuses on pharmaceutical research missions, is launching its W-Series 7 spacecraft, which is about three times smaller than Starfall.

Despite the name, W-7 will be Varda’s ninth reentry capsule launched to date. W-8 and W-9 were launched earlier this month on the Transporter-18 mission. W-7 features the cancer drug called Protac and will study whether microgravity can improve its solubility. (...)

Also onboard Bandwagon-5 is the Starburst-1 demo mission from Portal Space Systems Inc. The 260 kg spacecraft is designed to perform orbital maneuvers and support a customer payload of up to 50 kg.

This first demonstration of the Starburst spacecraft is “fully funded by Portal to prove capability ahead of customer missions,” the company said on its website. Customer flights are advertised as starting in 2027.
