Rozmieszczenie instrumentów łazika Perseverance (NASA/JPL-Caltech)O godzinie 13:50 CEST (7:50 EST) z wyrzutni ośrodka Centrum Lotów Kosmicznych imienia Johna Fitzgeralda Kennedy’ego w Stanach Zjednoczonych wystartowała rakieta Atlas V, wynosząc na orbitę misję Mars 2020, na którą składa się łazik Perseverance oraz latający dron Ingenuity. (...)

(...) Perseverance - czyli wytrwałość - to bezzałogowy robotyczny pojazd o masie 1043 kilogramów i rozmiarach samochodu. (...)

Photo: Jeff Seibert / AmericaSpace(...) Assisted by Ingenuity, the first helicopter ever to be deployed on another world, Perseverance will investigate the possible “biosignatures” of past life, collect a “cache” of soil and rock samples to be brought back to Earth on a future sample return mission, evaluate In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technologies and derive a better understanding of Mars’ dust-driven weather. And according to NASA Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen, speaking earlier today, it carries with it 11 million names of ordinary people, just like you and me. “Because we’re going together,” Dr. Zurbuchen explained, “as a world.” (...)

The original launch window for Perseverance extended from 17 July through 11 August, although a crane controller fault and contamination issues forced a couple of slippages, firstly to 20 July, then the 22nd and finally the 30th. Encapsulated in her Short Payload Fairing (SPF), Perseverance was hoisted atop the Atlas V on 7 July, topping-out the stack at 197 feet (60 meters) tall. (...)

(...) Technicians inserted the power generator through an access door on the Atlas 5’s payload shroud, then placed the device on the aft end of the Perseverance rover through an opening on the spacecraft’s backshell, which encloses the rover and its landing system during the journey from Earth to Mars.
The 99-pound (45-kilogram) unit was installed onto the rover Monday, according to Mary MacLaughlin, a NASA spokesperson.
After connecting mounting bolts and mating electrical lines, ground crews powered up the rover using the newly-installed MMRTG. (...)

"This is the first time in history when NASA has dedicated a mission to what we call astrobiology, the search for life, either maybe now or ancient life, on another world," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. "That river delta [in Jezero Crater] is a place that we believe there could be — not saying there is, we don't know, but there could have been at one point in time — life." (...)
The rover, which is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), is designed to operate for a nominal mission of one Mars year (687 Earth days). It will use that time to search for organic-rich geological samples, which it will then collect in test-tube-like canisters to leave on Mars' surface for
a future mission to come get and return to Earth by 2031. (...)

(...) The Martian atmosphere is about 96 percent carbon dioxide, so we built a little mechanical tree, because that is much easier than building a miniature, self-contained mining company.”
MOXIE’s objective: collect the carbon dioxide abundant in Martian air, convert it to oxygen, and measure the oxygen’s purity. After pulling in Martian air, the system filters out dust, compresses it, and then feeds it into the Solid OXide Electrolyzer (SOXE), the key element that takes pressurized carbon dioxide and uses a combination of electricity and chemistry to split the molecule into oxygen and carbon monoxide. The purity of the oxygen is analyzed, and then the oxygen is released back into the Martian atmosphere. (...)
