Był to zabytkowy jednosilnikowy samolot Beechcraft T-34 Mentor pilotowany przez 90-letniego byłego astronautę.
Do katastrofy lotniczej doszło ok. 20:40 CEST u wybrzeży wyspy Jones w kanale San Juan, w pobliżu wyspy Orcas, na której mieszkał Anders. Był jedyną osobą na pokładzie.
Zginął dokładnie 7. miesięcy po śmierci

Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, who snapped one of the most iconic images of the space age — a mesmerizing view of the blue-and-white globe of Earth rising above the moon's cratered horizon in the deep black of space — died Friday when a small plane he was piloting crashed off the coast of Washington state. He was 90 years old.
His son, Greg Anders, confirmed the death to CBS News, saying that the plane which crashed belonged to his father.

The FAA shared in a statement with PEOPLE that only a pilot was on board a Beechcraft T-34 Mentor plane, that "crashed into the water near Roche Harbor, Washington, around 11:40 a.m. local time Friday, June 7."
