John McFall został wyselekcjonowany jako astronauta z niepełnosprawnością w ramach selekcji ESA grupa 2022 (23.11.2022).

2000 w wieku 19 lat, wskutek poważnego wypadku motocyklowego amputowano mu prawą nogę powyżej kolana.

Po założeniu protezy ponownie zaczął biegać.

2005 został wybrany do reprezentacji Wielkiej Brytanii na Mistrzostwach Europy Międzynarodowego Komitetu Paraolimpijskiego (IPC) i zdobył brązowy medal w zawodach 200 metrów (klasa sportowa T42).

2014–2016 John McFall był lekarzem w brytyjskiej Narodowej Służbie Zdrowia, pracując w różnych specjalizacjach medycznych i chirurgicznych w południowo-wschodniej Walii w Wielkiej Brytanii.

2016-2018 ukończył szkolenie z zakresu chirurgii obejmujące chirurgię ogólną, urologię i urazy oraz ortopedię w dekanacie Wessex w Wielkiej Brytanii.

19.06.2023 UK Space Agency poinformowała o rozpoczęciu przez McFalla 2-letniego szkolenia astronautycznego wraz z astronautami piątej grupy ESA.
 
07-08.07.2023 brał udział w szkoleniu wodnym (działania po wodowaniu kapsuły) na Bałtyku - rozkładanie tratwy ratunkowej, korzystanie z sygnałów alarmowych, pływanie w piankach.

07.2023 brał udział w ćwiczeniu działań na wypadek pożaru - poszukiwanie i ratowanie członków załogi w zadymionych pomieszczeniach, gaszenie pożarów gaśnicami, przenoszenie rannych członków załogi przez przeszkody po ciemku.

McFall trenujący w ramach Project astronauts przeszedł szkolenie w lotach parabolicznych.

25.10.2023 Brytyjska Agencja Kosmiczna poinformowała o podpisaniu umowy z Axiom Space, na mocy której ma się odbyć lot z udziałem brytyjskich astronautów.

Former UK Paralympian John McFall has been hired as the first ever physically disabled astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA) following a rigorous selection process

John McFall, a former NHS surgeon in Hampshire and a former Paralympian, is the first disabled astronaut in the latest ESA astronaut cohort, having joined last year.

The world’s first astronaut with a disability, former UK Paralympian John McFall, has arrived in Germany to begin feasibility studies at the European Astronaut Centre.

John, a former NHS surgeon in Hampshire, joined the latest European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut cohort last year following a rigorous selection process and record UK Space Agency investment into ESA.

He will spend the next two years working with experts to identify how traditional equipment and facilities for astronaut life could be made more accessible and allow for a wider range of people to qualify for human spaceflight.

British astronaut John McFall carried the Paralympic flag at the opening ceremony of the games in Paris.

McFall was one of only two flag bearers, along with French sailor Damien Seguin, to represent the whole Paralympic Games, rather than a specific county.

Reflecting before the ceremony on being a flag bearer, McFall said he was “truly honoured”.

“I am truly honoured to be standing here today, as a Paralympian and a member of the astronaut reserve with a physical disability,” McFall said. (...)
