The inaugural launch of the Ariane 6 rocket, which was lauded from those from the President of France to the NASA Administrator, hit a notable snag in the third and final phase of the mission. Part of the rocket’s upper stage, called the Auxiliary Propulsion Unit (APU), was powered on for a third time as intended, but it quickly shut off after only seconds, causing the upper stage to deviate from its planned trajectory. WASHINGTON — With the successful completion of a core stage hot-fire test, the European Space Agency says it now expects the first launch of the Ariane 6 to take place in the middle of 2024.

At a Nov. 30 briefing, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher announced a launch period for the inaugural Ariane 6 flight of June 15 through July 31. A more precise launch date will be provided after qualification reviews in the spring of 2024

The first separation command, seeing the deployment of the OOV-Cube, Curium One and Robusta-3A, took place one hour five minutes into flight with the Ariane 6 upper stage in a circular, 577-kilometer-altitude orbit. Experiments YPSat and Peregrinus, attached to the upper stage, were also initiated.

Arianespace will launch Exotrail’s spacevan with Ariane 6

Arianespace will launch Exotrail’s spacevan on board an Ariane 6, as an auxiliary passenger.

This spacevan is the geostationary version of Exotrail’s Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV), due to be placed in Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) in the second half of 2026.

This first “GTO to GEO” mission for the spacevan, will demonstrate a new capacity to bring small satellites up to the geostationary arc, for Exotrail’s customer, the French space agency CNES, as one of the projects supported by the France 2030 national investment plan.

This new mission showcases Ariane 6’s unique versatility, flexibility and modularity.

Arianespace has signed a launch contract with Exotrail, an end-to-end space mobility operator, for the first GEO mission of its spacevan vehicle. This vehicle will be an auxiliary passenger on board the heavy-lift Ariane 64, version of the Ariane 6 launcher with four solid boosters, which will be launched from Europe’s Spaceport, in French Guiana, in the second half of 2026. The spacevan, which will be placed in a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO), is a servicing satellite notably designed to transport and deploy other satellites (as an Orbital Transfer Vehicle - OTV), or to host payloads in space. Ariane 6's fourth flight of 2025 will service Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system

Ariane 6's fourth and final commercial flight of the year will orbit a pair of Galileo satellites (Galileo L14), using an Ariane 62 (mission VA266).

Next after Galileo will be the first flight of the Ariane 64, which will orbit satellites of Amazon's Project Kuiper (mission VA267).

As announced by Arianespace early October, mission VA265 is scheduled for November 4th, 2025. Arianespace will launch the European Union's Copernicus Sentinel-1D satellite using an Ariane 6.

Arianespace's final launch of 2025, mission VA266, will place into orbit a pair of Galileo satellites (Galileo L14), servicing Europe's ultra-high performance global satellite navigation system. Mission VA266 will be the fourth commercial flight for Ariane 6. It will use an Ariane 6 with two boosters, the Ariane 62, which has successfully flown in this version since its inaugural flight in 2024.

The first launch of the Ariane 6 with four boosters, the Ariane 64, is next to be launched after Galileo. Called mission VA267, it will orbit satellites of Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband constellation.

Launch dates for mission VA266 as well as mission VA267 will be announced about a month prior to launch.

Ariane 6 launches Sentinel-1D radar imaging satellite

WASHINGTON — An Ariane 6 successfully launched a radar imaging satellite Nov. 4 after European agencies chose to use a larger rocket to ensure an earlier launch.

The Ariane 6 lifted off from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 4:02 p.m. Eastern. The payload, Sentinel-1D, separated from the upper stage 33½ minutes after liftoff.

Sentinel-1D, a 2,184-kilogram satellite built by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission’s Copernicus program, operates in a sun-synchronous orbit at 693 kilometers. It carries a C-band synthetic aperture radar and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) payload.

Like earlier Sentinel-1 satellites, Sentinel-1D will be used for Earth observation applications such as agriculture, flood monitoring and tracking ground motion, said Mauro Facchini, head of the Copernicus unit in DEFIS, the European Commission directorate responsible for space, during an Oct. 30 briefing.

The AIS payload detects ships and compares that data with radar imagery. “You can compare and combine the data,” Facchini said, allowing analysts to “check those vessels that are not transmitting,” such as ships involved in smuggling or piracy.

Sentinel-1D replaces Sentinel-1A, which remains in operation more than 11 years after its launch but is showing signs of degradation, particularly in its propulsion system.

“It’s still working well, but in a degraded mode,” said Simonetta Cheli, ESA’s director of Earth observation, at the briefing. “We cannot take the risk, and that’s why we tried to launch 1D as fast as possible.”

Pierre Potin, head of ESA’s Copernicus Space Office, said that because of those propulsion concerns, ESA plans to begin lowering Sentinel-1A’s orbit once Sentinel-1D is commissioned. He said doing so is a requirement of a “responsible space agency” to ensure the satellite reenters within 25 years after the end of its mission.

Sentinel-1D joins Sentinel-1C, a similar radar imaging satellite launched last December on a Vega C rocket, marking that vehicle’s return to flight after a December 2022 launch failure.

ESA announced in January that it had signed a contract with Arianespace to launch Sentinel-1D on Ariane 6 but did not specify at the time why it was not flying on another Vega C.

At the Oct. 30 briefing, officials said Ariane 6 offered a faster path to orbit than Vega C. “We need to make sure that 1D is up and running as fast as possible, and this was really the reason why we were looking at best timing and the most urgent option,” Cheli said.

While ESA and other European agencies have in recent years launched some satellites on SpaceX’s Falcon 9, they chose not to in this case. “We needed to find the best European vehicles to launch these satellites as soon as possible,” Facchini said, referring to both Sentinel-1C and -1D. “We are trying to launch as much as possible with European vehicles.”

“Ariane 6 was the launcher able to launch Sentinel-1D at the requested slot by the customer,” said Caroline Arnoux, senior vice president and head of the Ariane 6 business unit at Arianespace. “So it was the best launcher for this mission.”

This was the third Ariane 6 launch this year and the fourth overall. One more Ariane 6 mission is scheduled for later this year, carrying two Galileo navigation satellites.

All Ariane 6 missions to date have used the Ariane 62 configuration, which has two solid-rocket boosters. The first flight of the Ariane 64, with four boosters, was expected this year, but Arianespace said Oct. 16 that it has been delayed to early 2026.

Europe joins the constellation-launching game with debut of Ariane 64

Europe’s most powerful heavy-lift rocket, the Ariane 64, aced its inaugural flight today, propelling 32 satellites for the Amazon Leo constellation into low-Earth orbit.

This Ariane 6 variant is equipped with four strap-on solid rocket boosters (SRBs), doubling the design’s payload-to-LEO capability to 21.6 metric tons, compared to the variant that flies with two boosters.

On launch at 1:45 p.m. local time from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, the brilliant flare of the igniting SRBs lit up the sky. Shortly after liftoff, the rocket pitched over, correcting its trajectory to head northeast over the Atlantic, leaving the rainforest behind it.

“The Ariane 64 launch today is a major step forward for Europe’s launch capability,” Matt Archer, director of launch and in-space assembly and manufacturing at the UK Space Agency, told me by email.

The eight-story-high boosters separated cleanly from the 62-meter rocket at 2 minutes and 40 seconds into flight, as scheduled. That was followed soon after by the jettison of the rocket’s 20-meter-long carbon fiber fairings that shrouded the mast to which the satellites were attached, the reinforced plastic flexing wildly as it fell to the ocean.

All of the satellites had deployed as of 2:20 p.m. Eastern, Amazon Leo confirmed via X, bringing the constellation to 185 of the 3,232 planned for the “Gen 1” network. Amazon must reach 1,616 satellites by July 30, under the terms of its authorization from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, and has until July 2029 to deploy the rest.

Today’s launch was the first of 18 Ariane 6 launches that Amazon ordered in 2022, Arianespace’s largest order to date. Sixteen of those will utilize an advanced version of the SRB, dubbed P160C, that each provides 3700 kilonewtons of thrust from 156 tons of solid fuel.

“The set of evolutions that will be implemented throughout the months ahead will enable us to increase launcher performance by 20%,” said Arianespace spokesperson Daphne Joseph-Gabriel via email.

This launch featured another first: The second stage’s use of an intelligent auxiliary propulsion unit (APU) which delivered a continuously low thrust during satellite dispensing, so the departing spacecraft would not collide after separation from the dispenser mast.

Arianespace said the APU, which uses a 3D-printed gas generator, uses liquid hydrogen and oxygen from the Vinci upper stage engine’s tanks, and “is qualified for several hours of operation with multiple in-flight ignition capabilities.”

The 64’s debut was eagerly awaited by the 23-nation European Space Agency. Director General Josef Aschbacher told reporters in January that today’s flight would be a “very important milestone” — not least because it allows Europe to compete in the global orbital constellation delivery market.

The 64’s “increased carrying capacity is important for future ambitions, both commercially and strategically,” Archer of the UK Space Agency said. “But there is still a journey Ariane must go on to accelerate the cadence of launches and become more cost competitive.”

Arianespace CEO David Cavaillolles concluded the mission broadcast by saying that the next 64 launch is also for Amazon — “and I will be revealing the exact date in the coming weeks.”
