Apollo 8 launched 55 years ago—crewed by mission commander Frank Borman, lunar module pilot Bill Anders, and command module pilot Jim Lovell. Borman and Lovell previously flew together on the record-setting two-week Gemini VII mission, and Apollo 8 was Anders' first spaceflight.

During the #Apollo8 mission this week in 1968, humans entered lunar orbit and saw the far side of the Moon for the first time. Just before Loss of Signal (LOS) on their first orbit, Jim Lovell reported to Mission Control: "We'll see you on the other side."

On Nov. 12, 1968, NASA Headquarters put out the following statement: “The National Aeronautics and Space Administration today announced that the Apollo 8 mission would be prepared for an orbital flight around the Moon.” That momentous statement ended weeks of intense internal agency deliberations and public speculation about Apollo 8’s targeted mission. The original mission plan called for Apollo 8 to conduct the first test of the Lunar Module (LM) in Earth orbit, but when the LM fell behind schedule, NASA managers in August began contemplating sending the Apollo 8 crew on a lunar orbital test of the Command Module (CM). The decision hinged partly on a successful Apollo 7 mission, and with that milestone passed, NASA Administrator James E. Webb approved the daring plan. On only the second crewed Apollo mission, the first crew to launch on the Saturn V, and only the third launch of the mighty Moon rocket, with the second of those experiencing some serious anomalies, the decision weighed the risks against the benefits of achieving the Moon landing goal before the end of the decade. With the Dec. 21 launch date fast approaching, the Apollo 8 crew of Frank Borman, James A. Lovell, and William A. Anders and their backups Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, and Fred W. Haise had begun training for the lunar mission even before the official announcement. During a Nov. 16 press conference, Borman, Lovell, and Anders discussed their preparations for the historic mission. Pamiętam jak dziś te emocje. Wigilia, święta i ten załogowy oblot Księżyca. Swoją drogą między startem A 8, a lądowaniem A 17 (ostatni lot księżycowy) minęło niespełna 4 lata… Dziś brzmi to jak bajka o żelaznym wilku,  zwłaszcza w zestawieniu z bólami porodowymi programu Artemis, nie wspominając o wyczynach firmy Boeing dzielnie budującej CST-100. Nawet Elon wymięka.

SpaceX dostało tylko 3mld. Dla porównania wydali ponad 40 mld na SLSa, Oriona i jedynie co ta rakieta potrafi to polecieć na Księżyc za ponad 4mld i zrobić jakieś zdjęcia. Przez problemy budżetowe będą anulować każdą misję eksploracyjną, bo może istnieć tylko SLS.

Obserwowałem tę pionierską załogową wyprawę księżycową na bieżąco, bo ówczesne media w Polsce nadążały z przekazywaniem informacji. Zarówno prasa, radio i tv poświęcały temu przełomowemu wydarzeniu sporo miejsca. Natomiast wszystkie te kolorowe i czarno-białe fotografie z wyprawy Apollo 8 podziwiałem dopiero po powrocie załogi na ziemię i to one zrobiły na mnie największe wrażenie. Wtedy po raz pierwszy zobaczyłem fotografie Księżyca tak doskonałej jakości, że zwyczajnie mnie zatkało! Miałem wrażenie, że widzę powierzchnię Księżyca tak dokładnie, jak bym był uczestnikiem tego lotu i obserwował te niesamowite krajobrazy z okien modułu dowodzenia.
Wciąż pamiętam tamten niebywały czas i podziwiam astronautów Bormana. Lovella i Andersa, którzy dokonali tego niebywałego wyczynu.

Misja Apollo 8 odbyła się w 12. roku ery kosmicznej.
Artemis I odbyła się w 12. roku po zakończeniu ery programu STS.

W czasie misji Artemis I zostało przetestowanych wiele systemów rakiety SLS, a także kapsuły Orion.
Zostało zebranych wiele danych nt poziomów promieniowania na pokładzie statku kosmicznego.
Zamiast załogi na pokładzie znalazły się Helga i Zohar.

SLS została sprawdzona w czasie pierwszej misji księżycowej (pojawiło się wiele elementów do poprawy) i na razie jest to jedyna rakieta o tak dużych możliwościach.

Drugi lot SLS ma już wynieść załogę w okolice Księżyca, co ma być misją bardziej porównywalną z Apollo 8.

W przypadku Apollo 8 było to 3. użycie Saturna V co miało miejsce zaledwie 13 miesięcy od pierwszego lotu tej rakiety oraz był to jej pierwszy lot, który wyniósł ładunek w kierunku Księżyca.

"Program Apollo pochłonął prawie 26 miliardów ówczesnych dolarów. I teraz jeżeli uwzględnimy inflację i wszystkie zmiany, które nastąpiły po drodze, to na dzisiaj byśmy to przełożyli na 216 miliardów dolarów" - twierdzi Łukasz Wilczyński, prezes Europejskiej Fundacji Kosmicznej.

20.12.1968 pracownicy na LC-39A odkryli, że azot używany do płukania zbiorników w SM (#103) Apollo 8, zanieczyścił kriogeniczny tlen ładowany na pokład.

Workers at Pad 39A found OTD 1968, nitrogen used to flush the tanks in Apollo 8's SM (#103) had contaminated the cryogenic oxygen being loaded onboard. Removing the oxygen, re-flushing the tanks &  reloading a new supply of oxygen would not delay the planned December 21 launch.

50 Years Ago: NASA Announces Changes to Apollo 8

(...) On August 19, 1968, NASA held a press conference to announce changes to the Apollo 8 mission.  Deputy Administrator Thomas O. Paine announced that NASA dropped Lunar Module (LM) operations from Apollo 8, the first crewed Saturn V flight planned for December 1968.  Delays in ground preparations for LM-3 meant that it would not be ready to fly until February or March 1969, resulting in an extended gap between the first crewed Apollo mission of Apollo 7 in October and the LM-3 mission.  Apollo Program Director Samuel C. Phillips said that flying Apollo 8 in December provided an “opportunity for earlier experience in the operation of the Saturn V than otherwise could be obtained.”

Paine stated that NASA planned on using only the Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) for Apollo 8, but that no final decision on the precise mission profile would be made until after a successful Apollo 7 flight.  However, since mission planning and training for Apollo 8 had to begin before Apollo 7 flew, several options would remain under consideration including a circumlunar flight.
